The evidence submitted by the PDA informed several aspects of the final report, particularly in highlighting the growing volume of prescriptions dispensed by pharmacists in England, the impact that medicine shortages have on patients, and the way these pressures have sometimes resulted in patient frustration being directed towards pharmacists and their support staff.
The PDA conducted a member survey in December 2022, and both the results and the accompanying member feedback were instrumental in shaping the key themes of the PDA’s submission to the inquiry.
The PDA urges members to always engage with surveys where possible, as their insights significantly strengthen the PDA’s submissions to relevant bodies and alert decision makers to the issues faced by patient-facing pharmacists.
The PDA is hopeful that the government will implement some of the practical recommendations set out in the inquiry report, particularly the call for the DHSC to improve communication around medicine shortages by providing pharmacies and hospitals with more timely information.
